Bamboo Down Under - our story (so far)
Wednesday, 21 July 2010
Our idea to set up a retail nursery and tourist destination came from our love of all things bamboo - and the desire to educate and inspire the general public as much as we'd been, whilst on our never ending, always inspiring but at times frustrating, journey through the world of Bamboo.
It saddened us to think something as beautiful and useful as Clumping Bamboo could be so misunderstood, which is why a big part of what we do is educate. Unlike running bamboo which spreads, clumping bamboo only grows into a single clump of a certain size, generally reaching maturity within 3-5 years.
With shallow, fine fibrous roots, it really has less root material than most common garden plants - making it a problem solving not a problem casuing plant. We like to say "with clumping bamboo you get nothing for free - if you buy one plant you get one clump".
In 2003, we moved our wholesale bamboo nursery from Cedar Vale to Wongawallan, a 7 acre property thatt allowed us room to grow more bamboo and open our much anticipated Retail Nursery. After some tidying up of our new retail nursery, we commenced our first plantings - the Malay Dwarf Variegated hedge. Now, with all our main specimens in place, we are in the process of under planting our bamboo to further inspire you and enhance their beauty.
To this day we continue to search for new varieties both stunning in appearance and practical in their suitability to our climate and ever decreasing property sizes.
Be warned CLUMPING BAMBOO IS ADDICTIVE!! Just ask our many loyal customer who join us in the joy and excitement of watching a new bamboo culm breaking the soil surface and following its journey to the sky! Something we trust you will soon be enjoying for yourself!!!
