Latiflorus (Dendrocalamus latiflorus) is the best of the large bamboos growing to around 15mtrs in height with huge, tropical leaves. It is an absolutely awesome sight when fully grown. The poles reaching a diameter of 15cm (and sometimes more) and this species is extremely popular among visitors to our nursery. The poles are very strong and it is also grown in plantations for the bamboo shoot market. It cannot be grown on smaller blocks, only if you have a large amount of space or acreage.
Uses: Latiflorus is best planted as a massive feature and can be underplanted for a great garden effect. The poles can be used for building or arts and crafts. As it is so large, it also produces a good amount of shade for a table and chairs.
Planting: You need to allow a ground space of 4m x 4m for each Latiflorus you grow. Encourage it to clump out and form the largest culms by improving the soil in a hole atlas 3 x 3mtrs. It is very drought tolerant and hardy once established.
